If you like having access to Wi-Fi wherever you go, then here’s some good news for you: several major American cable companies are teaming up to give consumers access to Wi-Fi anywhere. Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, and others are collaborating on a service called CableWiFi, which has so far only been integrated into New York City and central Florida.
So what’s the big deal with CableWiFi? Well, high speed internet subscribers can get free access to Wi-Fi signals anywhere in their city. With more and more cable companies teaming up on CableWiFi, customers of any participating cable company will be able to use their Wi-Fi enabled devices in more places across the country.
To find out if there is a CableWiFi location near you, head to www.cablewifi.com, which will provide a list of Cable WiFi hotspots in your area. So far, hotspots are only available near New York City and the Tri-State area, as well as various indoor and outdoor locations in Los Angeles, Orlando, Philadelphia, and Tampa.
Free internet is always a good thing. Whether you’re waiting for a friend at Starbucks or you just don’t want to use slow, expensive data, Wi-Fi will soon be everywhere you need it. Once this plan goes through, it will be the largest joint initiative between cable companies to date.
Now, let’s just hope our cable bills don’t start going up to cover the costs of integrating this massive network of Wi-Fi hotspots.
