Blizzard is one of only a few gaming companies that can put on an annual event where it solely discusses its own games. Every year, Blizzard hosts BlizzCon in California and talks about upcoming plans for a number of Blizzard games.
The most important thing discussed at the BlizzCon keynote this year was another World of Warcraft expansion. Gamers weren’t sure if Blizzard was going to announce one more expansion for WoW or work on developing a new game (WoW 2? We can only dream).
Blizzard saved its most exciting news announcement for last. Here’s what you need to know about the newest World of Warcraft expansion:
-It will be called Warlords of Draenor
-It will raise the level cap to 100
-It will introduce a new world to explore along with new character models
-Warlords of Draenor will introduce a garrison system that lets players build strongholds in Draenor and then recruit NPCs to hang out inside their strongholds. Players will be able to accept stronghold-based missions and customize their holds with buildings and new defensive bonuses.
-Warlords of Draenor will once again come with a “Call to Arms” feature that lets you upgrade one of your old characters to level 90 right away
No release date has been announced thus far. It’s expected that this will be the last expansion pack for World of Warcraft, and really, level 100 sounds like an excellent place to cap off one of the best games in PC gaming history. I might even have to bring my old level 60 hunter and warrior out for a spin one last time.
And there’s no more real-world Diablo III auction house
Diablo III was not what the fans wanted. The game was hindered at an early stage by the real-world auction house where gamers could pay real money for in-game items. It weakened the value of in-game legendary items and left average gamers losing to rich players who could simply afford to buy their way to victory.
After announcing the WoW expansion pack, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime sent the crowd into a frenzy by saying that the company was finally getting rid of the real-world auction house – something that it promised to do two months ago.
Blizzard announces “hero brawler” competitor
The original DOTA was a mod for Warcraft III. But you probably already know that. For that reason, Blizzard feels it’s the right company to make a new “hero brawler” style game to compete with the entrenched fan bases of League of Legends and DOTA.
That new game will be called Heroes of the Storm. Between the Heroes of the Storm announcement, the Diablo III auction house cancellation, and the new WoW expansion pack, it’s clear that Blizzard remains a company dedicated to giving its players exactly what they want – and wasting as much of their time as humanly possible as they do it.
