Grand Theft Auto V was released in September 2013 – nearly four years ago. The internet has been buzzing this week after reports that the next version of Grand Theft Auto, GTA 6, could be released in 2018.
Is there any truth to this rumor? Is Rockstar really making GTA 6 as we speak? Where will the next Grand Theft Auto be set?
Today, we’re explaining everything we know about the next version of Grand Theft Auto so far.
We do have a guaranteed Rockstar release in 2017: it’s called Red Dead Redemption 2, and it’s guaranteed to be one of the biggest game releases of the year. The original Red Dead Redemption is one of the greatest games of all time, and gamers are already buzzing in anticipation of the sequel.
What does this mean for GTA fans? The release of RDR 2 means that we won’t see a GTA release this year. Rockstar isn’t going to release two blockbusters simultaneously.
Our friends over at Alphr.com analyzed the release dates of every Grand Theft Auto game to date. The original GTA was released way back in 1997. Games were released roughly every two years between GTA 2 and GTA: San Andreas. The modern games, however, were spaced about 4 or 5 years apart:
Based on this bulletproof analysis, we can conclude that GTA 6 is on track for a scheduled release date of 2018.
When games are as large as Grand Theft Auto, they take more than a few months to make. As you might expect, Rockstar is already (allegedly) working on the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series.
That rumor comes from TechRadar, which cites an unnamed insider who claims “preliminary work” has begun on the sequel.
“Preliminary work”, of course, could mean just about anything.
That same source mentioned in the TechRadar story above claims that Rockstar has not yet settled on a location for the next Grand Theft Auto.
However, the fact that GTA 6 could be set outside the United States has been a rumor for some time.
True to those rumors, Rockstar was allegedly considering Tokyo for its next game, but was eventually turned away by the city’s “problematic” road system.
London has also frequently appeared in rumors. However, the only reason London keeps popping up in rumors is because people want London – there’s no concrete evidence or rumors proving that London is being considered.
To date, all iterations of Grand Theft Auto have been set in North America. Back when Vice City was released, Rockstar was rumored to be considering Tokyo for its next release, but eventually settled for an LA-remake with San Andreas. So international rumors are nothing new.
Another problem with moving outside of the United States is that Rockstar has built an entire satirical world around modern America. Moving to London would involve ditching a big part of that universe. With America’s current political situation the way it is, the country seems rife for a new satirical take.
I can’t be the only one who wants Grand Theft Auto: Vancouver, can I?
Anyways, stay tuned for Grand Theft Auto 6 to be released (hopefully) sometime in 2018.
