How to Identify and Remove Space Hogs on Your Hard Drive

How to Identify and Remove Space Hogs on Your Hard Drive

Most PC users have had to deal with the pain of a full hard drive. Over time, the hard drive fills up with all of our data. Sometimes, we downloaded this data deliberately. In other cases, your computer has simply accumulated junk data over time.

But in any case, identifying and removing this space hogging data from your hard drive has a number of different benefits:

-Reduce PC errors

-Make more space for important files

-Speed up computer performance

If you want to do all of these things, then we have 3 easy solutions for you.

Solution 1 – TreeSize Free

TreeSize is a cool little application that works on Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista.

Step 1) Download TreeSize Free here

Step 2) Launch the program

Step 3) Click ‘Scan’

Step 4) Choose the drive you want to scan

Step 5) The scan won’t take more than a few moments, after which TreeSize will show you exactly how big each folder is when sized from biggest to smallest. Size is ranked according to gigabytes, megabytes, and kilobytes.

Step 6) You can investigate deeper into subfolders to see how much space is being taken up within that folder.

Step 7) Delete any large or small files that you no longer need

Step 8) One really annoying part about TreeSize is that it doesn’t dynamically update as you delete files, which means you have to constantly rescan your system to see how your latest file deletion affected the hard drive

Solution 2 – WinDirStat

WinDirStat tends to be the most popular hard drive cleanup tool next to PC Cleaner Pro. The main difference between WinDirStat and TreeSize is that WinDirStat has a visual representation of the space remaining on your hard drive. Large files are assigned massive colored blocks while smaller files are proportionally smaller squares. It’s a fun and unique way to see your hard drive, and it’s also a very useful way to pinpoint specific areas where you could save hard drive space.

Step 1) Download WinDirStat here

Step 2) Launch the program and choose the drive you want to evaluate, then click ‘OK’

Step 3) Give the program a few minutes to scan your system (it could take up to 5 or 10 minutes for a larger drive)

Step 4) View the summary screen and click around the visual representation below to see which files can be removed. If you see a large file square that you don’t need, you can simply right click and press ‘Delete’ to get rid of that file.

Step 5) Scan your computer regularly with WinDirStat to ensure your hard drive is running at optimal performance

Solution 3 – PC Cleaner Pro (recommended)

The two programs listed above are both very good at what they do. But there’s a problem: they’re a little too technical for the average PC user. Most PC users are scared to go snooping around their hard drive looking for files to delete. After all, it only takes one misplaced click to delete a very important file, and who knows what kind of affect that will have on your PC?

For that reason, we highly recommend using PC Cleaner Pro to efficiently remove unnecessary files from the hard drive. PC Cleaner Pro goes to work fast and requires little input from the user. It won’t delete any files that you need, but it will optimize the PC in hundreds of different ways.

Step 1) Download your free trial of PC Cleaner Pro by clicking here

Step 2) Install the program and press ‘Scan’

Step 3) Wait for the program to deliver a list of PC performance issues

Step 4) Click ‘Fix All’ and watch your PC issues and hard drive performance problems disappear

Step 5) Enjoy smoother PC performance and an error-free experience
