A fast PC should look fast, and sometimes, the default Windows interface just doesn’t cut it. If you want to make your PC look as fast as it runs, then you’re going to need to customize it using special software. Today, we’re going to teach you how to use a program called Rainmeter to make your desktop look really cool.
Once installed, Rainmeter should be running in your system tray, which is the array of icons in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop. Right click on the Rainmeter icon (it’s a grey raindrop) and select Manage. A menu will pop up with tabs for skins, themes, and settings. Under the ‘Active skins’ list, a skin called Simplicity will be active by default. Click on the arrow beside the Simplicity folder to expand it.
Once open, you’ll find a number of tools that you can activate, including widgets showing the moon phase, graphics card temperature, hard drive usage, and so much more. There are also apps that will automatically connect to your media player, display local weather data, and show your network usage, among other things.
While the Simplicity applications look cool on their own, there are thousands of other Rainmeter skins on the internet available for you to download. They’re all completely free. Here are a few of the websites you can browse for additional skins:
These websites have easy listings of some of the world’s most popular Rainmeter skins, along with newly released skins and other useful data. With thousands of skins available, it’s easy to find a customization that works for you.
Once you find a skin that you like, download it and then extract it to your Rainmeter ‘skins’ folder, which can be found in Libraries -> Documents -> Rainmeter.
Then, right click on the Rainmeter icon in your system tray and select refresh all. Rainmeter will scan its skins folders for any new data, giving you access to the new skins that you just downloaded. Then, head back to your Manage menu and load any of the new applications that you want.
Rainmeter is the fastest and easiest way to make your desktop look really cool. It doesn’t take up a lot of system resources, which means your PC should run as fast as ever. Ultimately, if you’re taking the time to speed up your PC, then you might as well take a few minutes to make your desktop look like it’s up to the task.
