If you’re like millions of Netflix users, then you run Netflix over your PC. There’s nothing wrong with this approach. In fact, it’s a great way to save money on a cable plan – you don’t even need to buy a big screen TV.
But in some cases, Netflix playback over a PC can be choppy. Sometimes, this can occur due to a weak internet plan. In other cases, it’s a software problem that can easily be fixed.
Today, we’re going to show you how to instantly improve Netflix playback on your PC using 5 simple tips and tricks:
Switch from wireless internet to wired internet
If your computer runs over a wireless internet connection, then you may have noticed some lag and long loading times. A good wireless connection is on par with a good wired internet connection, but a poor wireless network connection can leave you waiting for more TV shows than you actually ever watch.
A wired internet connection will support speeds of up to 100Mbps. Unless you’re in a Google Fiber internet area, your ISP can’t offer speeds anywhere close to that number. However, if you’re having chronic Netflix playback problems, it could be an issue with your poor wireless internet connection.
Connect an Ethernet cable to the back of your PC or move your PC closer to your wireless router.
Test your internet speed and talk to your ISP
Every day, ISPs around the world get away with selling shoddy internet connections to households at inflated prices. And most people will never notice the difference. That’s why smart PC users test the speed of their internet and compare it to the speeds promised by the ISP.
Go to www.speedtest.net and begin your test. Ideally, you should have a download speed of over 10mbps, although download speeds as slow as 4mbps should be able to stream HD video. In any case, you want to compare your tested speed with your promised speed and contact your ISP if there’s a discrepancy – your Netflix lag problems may be occurring through no fault of your own.
Change Netflix settings
Netflix allows users to easily choose the quality of video they want to watch. After logging into Netflix, click on ‘Your Account’ and then ‘Manage video quality’ under Your Streaming Plan.
Here, Netflix makes it easy for you to choose the quality level of the video you’re watching – from good, better, to best. If you’re noticing laggy video on ‘Best quality’, downgrade to the lower settings to see if that makes a difference.
Of course, if you don’t notice lag, make sure you upgrade to the ‘Best quality’ service to watch high-quality video all the time on Netflix (check to make sure you don’t have a data plan with a low cap).
Close background applications
I don’t know about you, but when I’m watching TV shows on my PC, I tend to be doing 5 other things at the same time – especially if it’s a boring TV show. If you have an older PC, then you’ll need to limit the number of background applications running. Close your unused browser windows, for example, and exit out of Facebook, Skype, or whatever else you’re doing. In many cases, this is all that’s needed to instantly fix your Netflix speed problems.
