Major corporations pay an average of $8.9 million defending cyber attacks

This year has been rough for the PC security industry. It appears that hackers are becoming smarter – or at least more determined – than ever before, and that means more corporations are experiencing data leaks and other problems.

But many people are surprised to learn the true cost of cyber security. Over the past year, companies around the world paid an average of $8.9 million to defend cyber-attacks. This figure was reached by a research group called the Ponemon Institute, which studied 56 corporate and government organizations throughout the United States, UK, Germany, Japan, and Australia.

American companies spent the most on cybercrime by far. They were also far more likely to be attacked by hackers, viruses, and other types of malware. Meanwhile, outside of the United States, denial-of-service attacks tended to be the most common. Denial-of-service attacks are relatively easy to defend against, which is one reason why companies outside of America spent significantly less money on computer security.

Some have pointed out that the sample number of organizations included in this study – 56 – was too small to reach firm conclusions. However, $8.9 million is a lot of money any way you look at it, and it’s a 6% increase over last year’s number.

So what does this information mean? Today, companies need to shell out big bucks in order to protect their systems – and their customers – from becoming victims of the wave of cybercrime that is sweeping across the internet. If they aren’t willing to spend money on PC security, then they risk becoming another one of the hundreds of data leaks that has been reported in recent years.
