It’s been too long since we’ve had an update for the Surface and Lumia product lineups (over a year). Microsoft should be fixing that problem with an October 6 event that it just announced today.
Microsoft insiders are expected to hear about new Surfaces and new flagship Lumia phones at the event.
The teaser sent to reporters today said,
“We have some exciting news to share about Windows 10 devices.”
There was no relevant information on the invitation. Microsoft is being weirdly mysterious.
Many people are taking that mystery to assume that Microsoft has something big planned:
“Reports have indicated, however, that Microsoft has an enormous launch underway”, reported PCWorld.com.
Some of the things that could be announced at the event include:
-One or two new models of Surface tablets
-New PCs, tablets, and laptops using the new Intel Skylake processors
-Two new flagship phones that are currently codenamed Talkman and Cityman (thankfully, these just appear to be code names and not final names)
-A new Microsoft Band? (that’s Microsoft’s fitness tracker that has so far struggled to attract the third-party apps found on rivals like Android Wear and the Apple Watch, but is still a very good fitness tracker)
The Surface Pro 3 contributed significantly to Microsoft’s hardware revenue. Better yet, the Surface brand appears to have taken a turn for the better. All of the billions of dollars of marketing money spent over the last 3 years seems to have made people take Microsoft’s flagship tablet more seriously.
Another key point to get from this event is how much Microsoft has changed over the last few years. Yes, Microsoft is still the world’s largest software company. But all of the major announcements at the October 6 event involve hardware. Microsoft is slowly, but successfully, making the shift from a purely software company to a hybrid business with a significant device division.
With that in mind, we can’t wait to see what Microsoft has planned for the Surface next, which should be the best tablet Microsoft has ever released.
The device announcement will take place on Tuesday, October 6 at 10am EDT. You can watch online or on your Xbox.
