Microsoft fans are eagerly awaiting the next great Microsoft CEO. However, according to recent reports, that CEO announcement is not going to happen anytime soon.
Microsoft will reportedly wait until 2014 before announcing Steve Ballmer’s successor. Specifically, the new CEO is expected to be announced in early 2014. Microsoft exec John Thompson – who is in charge of finding Ballmer’s successor – said in a blog post:
“We’re moving ahead well, and I expect we’ll complete our work in the early part of 2014.”
The information in the blog post is in contrast to the latest Microsoft CEO rumors. Those rumors stated that the new Microsoft CEO would be chosen before the end of this year, although that individual would not take over until 2014.
Choosing the next CEO of the world’s largest software company can’t be easy. Thompson has explained some of the nuances of the decision-making process over the last few months, which included:
-An initial group of 100 candidates
-A smaller group of 20 candidates
-A group of “only a handful” of names
Some of the names mentioned come from within Microsoft, while others are outside hires. Microsoft’s executive vice president of Cloud and Enterprise services, Satya Nadella, has been mentioned as an inside hire, but other names include Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally as well as former Skype CEO Tony Bates.
Looks like we’ll have to wait until the New Year before we can theorize about the direction Microsoft is about to take!
