New study claims 69% of antivirus users get their software for free

Over the past few years, the price of PC security has been on a consistently downward trajectory. Today, protecting a PC is more affordable than ever, and top of the line security programs are available for between $20 to $40 per year.

In spite of that fact, 69% of PC users still appear to be getting their antivirus software for free. Free antivirus software includes the trial versions pre-installed on new PCs as well as other free solutions available to be downloaded online.

Furthermore, a recent study performed by Boston Consulting Group revealed that many of these free antivirus users are located in expanding markets like India and China. When viewed from a business perspective, this presents a huge opportunity for software companies that want to expand into the fastest growing markets in the world. Internet users in these countries obviously understand the importance of antivirus software, but they’re not willing to pay the price that existing antivirus companies are offering.

There is some good news for the companies that design antivirus programs: 95% of desktop PC users (and 92% of laptop PC users) claim to have some type of antivirus software installed on their computers. In many cases, these antivirus solutions are basic and free, but having basic protection is certainly better than having no protection.

Is free antivirus software bad?

Free antivirus software isn’t inherently bad. However, it does lead to some major computer problems. Why? Because the people who create viruses and malware assume users will install the easiest solution on their computers. The easiest solution is free antivirus software.

In other words, viruses and malware are specifically designed to evade the filters of free antivirus programs. So, while you might think your computer is protected, viruses could be running rampant on your computer.

For that reason, it never hurts to pay for antivirus software. As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, antivirus software is more affordable today than it has ever been in the past. And for $20 to $40, you can have a subscription to a top-of-the-line antivirus program for a year.
