It’s no secret that tablet computers are becoming more and more popular every year. Today’s tablet computers are more powerful than many desktops people have at home. And instead of upgrading their machines, people are realizing that they’re perfectly happy with tablets.
Well, these consumer trends have started to take their toll on the desktop/laptop PC market. And according to a recent study by research firm Gartner, tablet PCs will be on top of the marketplace in just three years.
That study is called “Forecast: Devices by Operating System and User Type, Worldwide, 2010-2017, 1Q13 Update.” It can be found on Gartner’s website here.
Here’s what the report states in point form:
-Most users will be satisfied with the experience they get from a tablet as their main computing device
-Consumers will shift their time away from their PC to tablets and smartphones and they will no longer see their PC as a device that needs to be updated on a regular basis
-The desktop/laptop PC market will decline 7.6% in 2013
-Tablet shipments in 2013 are expected to grow 69.8% when compared to 2012
-By 2017, Gartner predicts there will be 468 million tablet shipments compared to 272 million PC shipments
So what do you think? Is it time to chuck that old PC out your window and use your iPad all day every day? Or do you still enjoy spending time on a good old desktop PC?
As a gamer and someone who works at home, I love my dual HD monitor desktop setup. And attached to a powerful gaming desktop PC, I get all my entertainment needs packed onto one desk. I can’t do that with a tablet – yet.
